Brought my book, hauled it around, but did not work. Couldn't work on board, on the river of 5000 years. Not on shore because I could always take a horse-drawn shay cab for ten Egyptian pounds ($3) and explore, say, Luxor--

back streets and bazaars with chickens, donkeys, camels, water buffalo, children and grandparents; corn in husks piled up, fruit stands, women in chadoor carrying crates of potatoes on their heads, men scurrying by in their flapping galabias, the melon-seller squatting on the corner, smoke from the beehive ovens, the kirkady vendor with his cart of urns and small glasses.... (Kirkady is an Egyptian drink made from hibiscus flowers.)
